The Brazilian American Chamber of Commerce in NY announced Judge Sérgio Fernando Moro as the Brazilian recipient and Michael R. Bloomberg as the American Recipient of the 2018 Person of the Year Awards.

For the past 48 years, the Chamber has honored as “Person of the Year” two prominent leaders, one Brazilian and one American, who have been particularly instrumental in forging closer ties and enhancing the relationship between Brazil and the United States.

Judge Sérgio Fernando Moro

Judge Moro became a federal judge in 1996, one year after completing his Bachelor of Law degree at the Maringá State University in his home state of Paraná. He subsequently received a Juris Doctor from the Federal University of Paraná in 2002.

Before being called to preside over cases in the Operação Lava Jato, Judge Moro worked on a number of other high-profile cases. Notably, at the request of a justice of the Supreme Court, Dr. Moro served as an auxiliary judge in the Mensalão case, which involved an unprecedented investigation into a vote-buying scheme in the Brazilian Congress that concluded in 2012.

Because of his leadership in the Lava Jato case, he was ranked 13th in Fortune’s 2016 List of World’s Greatest Leaders. He was also in Time Magazine’s list of the 100 Most Influential People for the same year and in 10th place on Bloomberg Businessweek’s list of 50 Most Influential People in the World of Finance.

Michael R. Bloomberg

Michael R. Bloomberg is an entrepreneur and philanthropist who served three terms as Mayor of the City of New York. He grew up in a middle-class home in Medford Massachusetts. He graduated from Johns Hopkins University and received an MBA from Harvard Business School. In 1966 he was hired by Salomon Brothers, eventually running the firm’s Information Systems. In 1981 Mr. Bloomberg was let go from Salomon in a corporate restructuring and launched Bloomberg LP with his partners in a one room office. Together they built a computer terminal that gave investors real-time access to Treasury bond prices. Today Bloomberg LP is a global company that has more than 19,000 employees in more than 176 locations worldwide.

In 2002 he was elected the 108th Mayor of New York City, serving three terms. During his tenure he made many important improvements in the quality of life for the citizens of New York. Upon leaving City Hall at the end of 2013, Michael Bloomberg returned to the company he founded while also devoting more time to philanthropy, which has been a top priority for him throughout his life. In 2014, Bloomberg was appointed U.N. Special Envoy for Cities and Climate Change and in 2016, Bloomberg began serving as the WHO global ambassador for noncommunicable diseases.

Today, Bloomberg Philanthropies employs a unique data-driven approach to global change that has grown out of his experiences as an entrepreneur and mayor. In addition to Bloomberg’s various philanthropic activities, which are directed towards ensuring better, longer lives for the greatest number of people, he has taken The Giving Pledge, a commitment by the world’s wealthiest individuals and families to dedicate most of their wealth to giving back.

Judge Moro and Michael Bloomberg’s nomination were both widely proposed by the members and unanimously approved by the Chamber’s Board of Directors. The Board is comprised of a broad spectrum of leading Brazilian and U.S. firms that are active in both countries.

Judge Sergio Moro and Michael Bloomberg will be honored at the 2018 Person of the Year Awards Gala Dinner, to take place at The American Museum of Natural History in New York on Tuesday, May 15th. Over 800 leaders from the international business, financial, and diplomatic communities convene in New York City each year at this traditional gala to pay tribute to the honorees.
