Tours will be offered on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, and are expected to increase tourist activity in the cities along the route.

A new tourist train will connect the states of Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro: beginning on the second half of the year, tourists will get to travel a new scenic route along eight cities of the two states. The trains have already been restored, and nine wagons are being prepared to transport tourists through the 160-km route from Cataguases (Minas Gerais) to Três Rios (Rio de Janeiro).

According to information from the Ministry of Tourism, the six remaining towns in the route are Leopoldina, Recreio, Volta Grande, Além Paraíba and Chiador (in Minas) and Sapucaia (in Rio). The tours will be offered on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, and are expected to boost tourism activity in the municipalities crossed by the route.

The Rio-Minas Tourist Train project is coordinated by “Friends of the Train” (a Civil Society Organisation of Public Interest) in partnership with the municipal governments involved and private companies of the region. The Centro Atlântica company (a railway concessionaire) will operate the trains, and a number of organisations of the Brazilian government connected to the railway sector will also provide support.
