However, hundreds of people collapsed and needed medical assistance. The temperature was 95F with a thermal sensation of 105F. Hundreds of bottles of water were handed out to revelers. At least 30 revelers fell ill and were taken to the hospital. The Municipal Health Department (SMS), since last Friday, registered 22,921 visits to Emergency Care Units (UPAs) and regional emergency centers.
In the same period, 12 heat-related treatments were carried out, of which six were due to sunburn, three were due to heatstroke and three were due to dehydration, according to the Department.
Regardless of the heat, Rio’s city hall forecasts that up to 5 million people will enjoy the 2024 carnival in the capital of Rio de Janeiro.
