The Fernando de Noronha Archipelago Historical Ensemble was officially recognized as Cultural Heritage of Brazil. The location, off the coast of the state of Pernambuco, is considered a Brazilian paradise. In addition to a sought-out travel destination, it is also home to memories, stories, traditions and narratives that contribute to the make-up of the country’s cultural identity.
The Cultural Heritage Advisory Board of Brazil’s National Historical and Artistic Heritage Institute (Iphan) approved the inscription by 
unanimity.
The decision recognizes the historical and cultural value of the archipelago, and the fortifications and the urban settlement of Vila dos Remédios, including some of the historical buildings found in the settlements, are now considered protected cultural heritage of the country.
The archipelago is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Historical Ensemble
The Fernando de Noronha Archipelago Historical Ensemble comprises different fortifications and urban complexes. One of them is the Fortified System, composed by four small forts: Saint Anthony, Our Lady of Conception, Saint Peter of Boldró and Reduto de Santana.
There is also the Urban Ensemble of Vila dos Remédios, including the village/prison colony and the urban centre of the island settlement, as well as several isolated cultural assets: the Quixabá Village, the Chapel of St. Peter of the Fishermen, the Air France building and a cultural testimony of American presence on the Island (the “Igloo” at the Village of the Americans).
Natural Paradise
Comprised of 21 Islands, the archipelago of Fernando de Noronha is outrageously beautiful. The abundant vegetation and the crystal clear blue waters form cinematographic scenery and are home to several species of turtles, sharks, schools of colorful fish and dolphins.
Diving professionals and amateurs regularly seek Fernando de Noronha. The archipelago offers visibility of up to 50 m deep, with pleasant temperatures around 28° C.
Visitors are restricted, but the lucky few visitors will find the most relaxing, and most beautiful place on earth.
What to See
Dolphin-watching: Hundreds of dolphins congregate every morning at the same sheltered bay, and can be watched from the cliffs above. The bay is officially known as the Baía dos Porcos (Bay of Pigs), but over time it has come to be known as Baía dos Golfinhos (Dolphin Bay).
Porto de Santo Antonio
This village is the island’s only harbor. From here, small boats take visitors on tours of the island’s coastline.
Praia do Sancho
This beach is more notable for what it doesn’t have than for what it does. There are no deckchairs, no showers, no beach bar, and no facilities of any kind. But, Sancho was a recent winner of the coveted Best Beach in Brazil award.
Vila Dos Remédios
The tiny capital is a village cobbled with grey stones, its streets leading towards a lovely beach. A colonial building is the seat of the island’s government. The remains of 18th-century houses are almost engulfed by the encroaching forest.
