Antonio Guterres, who will replace Mr. Ban Ki-moon as Secretary-General of the United Nations from January 1st 2017 said that Brazil demonstrates to the world the importance of respect for human rights.

The country was elected to the United Nations Human Rights Council.

During a conversation with the Brazilian president, Michel Temer, Guterres acknowledged the role Brazil plays by respecting human rights in light of their intrinsic value, and not because of political or military objectives. He said also that the country may be particularly important – especially at a time when the world is moving towards multipolarity – by demonstrating the universality of these rights and emphasizing the importance of dialogue.
