The best hotel in the world is Passalacqua, an 18th-century villa on the shores of Lake Como in Italy that opened just over a year ago.

The hotel is the former home of composer Vincenzo Bellini and is located in seven hectares of gardens with a terrace. Rates start at US$1,300 per night, according to the organization.

Overall, the list is dominated by hotels in Europe and Asia, with Asia taking up half of the top 10 spots. But Brazil was not left out. The list, which is made by 580 anonymous voters, including travel journalists, hoteliers and luxury travelers from around the world, has one Brazilian hotel and the only one in South America.

In the 27th position is Rosewood, in São Paulo.
