Taylor Swift arrived in Rio de Janeiro on Thursday (16) for a series of shows in Brazil and, in Rio, even Christ the Redeemer joined the “Swifie Fever”. The fans asked and the monument paid a tribute to the singer “wearing” the famous shirt that the singer wore in “You Belong With Me”, adapted with the words “Welcome to Brazil”.
After requests to Rio City Hall, the “swifties” managed to put the projection for the pop artist into practice.
“Welcome to Brazil”, it said, in English, with the names of the country’s 27 states.
The rector of the Christ the Redeemer sanctuary, Omar Raposo, responded to the request with a challenge on Instagram: raise 300,000 reais for charity in exchange for the welcoming message.
The response was so impressive that it took the fundraising website offline, and the campaign was extended until Sunday, the last day of Swift’s three-night stay in Rio.
According to the organizers, despite technical problems, the campaign raised more than R$180.000 in less than 24 hours, which will be used to donate basic food baskets on the occasion of World Day of the Poor, on November 19, an initiative launched by Pope Francis.
