The title of World Book Capital is awarded annually by UNESCO to a city that has demonstrated excellence in its activities to promote reading. The city of Rio de Janeiro was selected for the title in 2023, making it the first Portuguese-speaking city to receive the honor.

The city will assume this role starting on April 23, 2025, when World Book Day is celebrated. Rio will be responsible for promoting literature and coordinating events.

The city of Rio de Janeiro has a rich history of literature and culture. In addition to being the birthplace of authors of national and international prestige, the city is home to important institutions and events, such as the Brazilian Academy of Letters, the National Library, the Real Gabinete Português de Leitura, the Book Fair (Bienal do Livro), the National Union of Book Publishers (Snel) and the Festa Literária das Periferias (Flup).

The selection of Rio de Janeiro as World Book Capital is a recognition of the city’s commitment to promoting reading and literacy. It is also a celebration of the Portuguese language and culture.
